Jurys Out on Jury’s Inn

Posted on

I am so going to rant on Trip Advisor this time. Just like ranty man’s review I read last week of this very hotel. Jury’s Inn in Plymouth.

I knew before I arrived that the parking situation was less than ideal. I had chosen to ‘temper’ the ranty reviews of this as being a bit OTT. They weren’t.

It’s a dingy car park, under Mecca Bingo. That should describe it well. It’s under the hotel too. Is there any direction to hotel residents? No. None. It’s rubbish.

It’s £10 per day parking. Oh, the night before you check out you can get a voucher for £6 instead of £10. wow.

So you have to walk 10-15 mins to update your parking everyday. (no helpful access to the hotel from car park.)

Checked in and the professionally unhelpful receptionist was just that. Didn’t offer newspaper option, credit card information (to enable tabs at bar, restaurant or room service) or anything that could be helpful.

Lifts – they can only be operated by keycard, one button at a time, and regularly go up and down the floors at random, it took 10 mins to go 5 floors, on more than one occasion.

Three of us in our room, one towel. Three small, rock hard pillows. We called for more and were told ‘as we are full we don’t really have enough’… ‘if we can find some we’ll bring them.’

First morning, our room door was opened and banged shut by cleaner before 8am!

Can I just say, I hate this £100 per night hotel? When I get home I am so getting Ranty on TripAdvisor.

I won’t be staying at Jury’s Inn again either. I tweeted them and nada. They make Premier Inn experience like Four Seasons.

*rant over* (for now)

Charlie the Pigeon Killer

This week has been hard. But I am nearly through the hard-stuff now.

I am off to an Indian Wedding this afternoon,  a friend of Stu’s is getting married.  Tonight is in Surrey (cocktail dress) and tomorrow is a Black Tie event in Poole, Dorset.

I have been in a dilemma about what to wear, had three failed shopping missions and finally found a dress yesterday afternoon….

Today I had to rush around town to get a new pashmina, and some sparkly accessories…. I am now done in. Collected the dry cleaning (dress for tonight and Stu’s two suits) and am due to start packing at 3pm to leave soon after.

The hotel Stu has booked for Saturday is a chocolate themed hotel?! I’ve just had a look and apparently there are Chocolate Fountains available for each room and daily chocolate stashes as standard!! lol.  Serves us right for leaving the booking til the last minute!

The venue for the Poole wedding is the Italian Villa – which is beautiful. (and the food looks good too!)

Dog is off ot his kennels with his ‘duck’, cat will no doubt continue his massacre of the Newbury pigeons… My friend is staying to look after the evil homicidal maniac, I bet she doesn’t pick up the carcasses everyday….

Oh, and still have nowhere to live at the end of the month 😦

Walking to achiness

We are doing the Moonwalk for Brea

st Cancer on 15th May (just two weeks away) and this was the final training walk before the real thing.

A Cosmetic Walking Queen

Posted on

Well the cosmetic conundrum was settled in the normal manner. This being, I walk into the department store, I am greeted by heavily made up cosmetic professional who renders me a gibbering wreck and I end up buying ALL aforementioned requirements from her brand as am too inept at saying ‘No, let me shop around, and no, get away from me with that foundation…’  She was a Clarins woman.  I *think* that I managed to conceal my terror when my purchases were sub-totalled on her till…

Still if I look like Claudia Schiffer inside a week it will be worth it.

Friday night went for a lovely Thai meal and had my favourite starter (beef thing with chilli’s, lime and nam plas dressing thingy)

The beef thingy

Add to that a lovely Thai Green Curry with prawns the size of my fist and a chilled bottle of Sauv Blanc and this Emma was a happy lady.

I don’t think the pre-dinner, double G&T was a good idea as I passed out almost immediately on returning home.

Saturday broke, a beautifully clear and sunny day, so I took up the offer of a 10 mile walk. (Guilt at the over indulgence a motivational factor I think).

Walk was from Newbury,  through Greenham Common, past the picturesque redundant Nuclear Bunkers and along all 1.5 miles of ex-US air base runway (now less tarmac and more gorse and prostrate cows).

One that got away

We then meandered through miles of fields, until finding the pub stop at Crookham Common, which was called the ‘Traveller’s Friend’.  This pub name is inappropriate. Dogs are not even allowed in the garden. So we had to have our pint and exceedingly rank baguette and stingy on the cheese ‘cheesy chips’ on a bikers bench by the front door, eye to eye with the wall mounted ash tray and overgrown flower ciggarette butt bed.

Not one for the ‘Good Pub/Food Guide’.

We continued to Midgham through a beautiful bridal path, through vast swathes of Snowdrops bathed in sunshine with Hamish carrying his 4ft tree trunk, bashing us in the back of the knees every time he over-took us.

We decided to walk back to Thatcham down the canal, where Hamish actually did nearly catch us a swan or two.  Lovely part of the canal until you reach Thatcham and walk past at least two miles of warehouses and distribution centres – a huge industrial area.

We jumped on the train at Thatcham (sure the fellow travellers loved Hamish’s ‘just out of the canal’ aroma).  And wandered home.

Then discovered I had actually walked 10.6 miles. Without moaning! Seriously must be good at this walking thing, and realised it’s why I hate Julia Bradbury so much – it is jealousy! She has my job!

(n.b. in my post walk euphoria and delirium I also agreed to do the Moonwalk – the one for charity, not Michael Jackson going backward thing. That’s 26 miles! In the dark! In a bloody bra!)

Did tapas and a few glasses of red and fell asleep with amazing ease again!

Sunday, I picked up the girls and we went to my Mother’s for dinner.  We visited my Granny in her home… she has a new ‘boyfriend’, Arthur. Although they both have dementia, so it’s a bit like 50 First Dates, still, at least they don’t get to that bored stage with each other…

We had a lovely roast and an afternoon of tv, then a family battle over Uno Extreme. It got tense.  I don’t know why everyone is so bloody competitive. But I won the most games….

Right. Back at it.

Long weekend break over… too much excess but it was nice to get away and have Fish n’ chips from the infamous Magpie Cafe in Whitby on Friday after a nice beach walk (but bloody cold)

Chicks on the beach

Saturday we went into Yarm, a charming town and had a mooch and coffees

Fin relaxing after his choccocino and read of the Times

Drove over the downs this morning to collect the dog from the kennels (yes, I drive a long way to a ‘posh’ kennels, as he is by boy) and the snow storms and blizzards were amazing!  I skidded about and had visions of being rescued by a (tall) jockey on a priceless racehorse, but with my fabulous driving skills I negotiated said Downs and Blizzards and made it back to Newbury (distinct lack of snow pah!) and to work by 10.30am.

Lo and behold

(sshhhh I did lose another lb this weekend, but I’m not talking about it)

Had a manic but fun weekend…. just about to finish work at four so that I can go home and actually attack a bit of the housework etc before this week really kicks off.

Friday night went to Ellie’s house night – there are some children with a lot of confidence at that school – it amazes me every time I go there. They all get up and have a go in front of 200 people – not all talented but their enthusiasm is enviable. When I think about the fuss that the solicitors at work make about doing a lecture or talk to journalist. Pfft.  Ellie was one half of Jedward – very funny and again not scared to strut her stuff across the stage. A couple of really good singers, a great guitarist and an amazing dancer.

Saturday we went to the smoke – eventually after a crappy journey with buses and trains as rail works between Newbury and Reading. Went to the diet and fitness show, which was a right waste of time. Then to the new Abercrombie store – Ellie loved it and wished she had had her picture taken with the model!

Had dinner at Satsuma – much better value than Wagamama’s.

Ellie's Sushi at Satsuma

The girls definately had fun tho…

Having fun

Weekend over

It’s Monday morning again. Quite a good weekend – although don’t know how well the diet is going…

Friday did some Davina fit and we stayed in and had Thai curry (low fat coconut milk I may add!) Had a long day at work so was just knackered.

Saturday morning more Davina Fit, walked the dog for an hour and had hissy fit that I had only lost 1lb this week. Am officially a diet bore.

Sat night went out with my parents for my Dad’s bday and got very pissed. I hate how my mouth works overtime when I am drunken. I am just like my dad *hangs head in shame*.

Sunday went for a lovely walk in Petworth, while visitng Stu’s parents for a fabulous Sunday lunch of Beef Wellington. Took some pics and hopefully walked off the weekend’s excesses. Not bad for a diet chick.

Monday morning now and I am back on the wagon.

Here’s my fave pic from yesterday.

Pure luck. But I loved this one.
